An Achaian city; the home of Diokles.
The exact location of Phere is unknown but references in the Odyssey, by Homer, suggest it was in Messene on the Peloponnesian Peninsula. After leaving Pylos on his way to Sparta, Odysseus' son Telemachos traveled by chariot for one day to reach Phere. From Phere to Sparta took another day, indicating Phere was approximately midway between Pylos and Sparta.
