Olenie Rock
Olenian Rock
Rock of Olen

A distinctive landmark in northern Elis.

The Olenie Rock was in Elis on the border with Achaia (Achaea). Nestor of Pylos was a young man when he participated in a war between the Pylians and the Epeians.1 The Pylians chased the Eleans as far as the Olenie Rock and Hill of Alesion (Alesium) before the goddess Athene (Athena) turned back Nestor and the Pylian army.

The geographer Strabo (first century BCE designated the Olenie Rock as a mountain called Scollis. The name evolved to become Santameriotiko and finally Santomeri.

1. The people of Elis were called Epeians and Eleans; the Epeians preceded the Eleans as inhabitants of Elis.
