A Greek port city in Karia (Caria).
Miletos was founded by the Ionians in Karia on the coast of the Aigean (Aegean) Sea in Anatolia (Asia Minor) near the Maiandros (Meander) River.
After the early seventh century BCE Miletos was instrumental in the colonization of the Hellespont1 and the area around the Black Sea; Miletos was ideally situated to trade with the Greek mainland and the Greek colonies of Anatolia.
1. Hellespont (Helle's Sea)—generally considered to be the modern Dardanelles; in antiquity, the Hellespont included the Propontis and a large portion of the northern Aigean Sea.
