Meliboia
Meliboea

A city in the domain of Philoktetes (Philoctetes).

During the Trojan War, the Achaian (Achaean) soldiers from Meliboia, Methone, Olizon, and Thaumakia (Thaumacia) originally were commanded by Philoktetes, but he was bitten by a snake before reaching Troy and replaced by Medon, son of Oileus.

Meliboia is mentioned by numerous classical Greek and Roman authors but they fail to give the precise position of the town. The location of Meliboia can only be determined by suggestions left by the geographer, Strabo (first century BCE). When describing the destruction of the Persian fleet (480 BCE) by a storm off the coast of Magnesia, Strabo says some of the wreckage was washed ashore at Meliboia, which was on a gulf between Mount Pelion and Mount Ossa. The following map indicates a probable site for Meliboia.
