A city on the northern coast of the island of Krete (Crete).
The modern city of Chiana occupies the site of ancient Kydonia. There seems to be no doubt that Kydonia was founded by a man named Kydon (Cydon). Whether Kydon was a son of Tegeates of Arkadia (Arcadia) or the god Hermes was a matter of opinion.
The location of the city on the coast facing Lakonia (Laconia) made it an ideal port for commerce with the Peloponnesian Peninsula. Kydonia, Knosos (Cnosus) and Gortys (Gortyn) were considered to be the three most important cities in Krete.
