The Aigean Islands are any and all islands in the Aigean Sea.
The islands of the southern Aigean are significantly more numerous than those of the northern Aigean. There is a group of islands called the Sporades in the northern and southern sea. Sporades means '"scattered." The northern Sporades are scattered northeast of the large island of Euboia. The southern Sporades are grouped off the western coast of Asia Minor and are also referred to as the Dodecanese, meaning "12 islands." The remainder of the islands in the southern Aigean are generally called the Cyclades meaning "centered around" the sacred island of Delos.
