| The Porch of the Karyatids (Caryatids) as seen when entering the Acropolis. In ancient times, these magnificent columns could not have been seen from this vantage point. The stones scattered in the foreground are the ruins of the Temple of Athene Polias, i.e. Athene, Guardian of the City. The temple would have hidden the Porch of the Karyatids from most visitors to the Acropolis. (Mid-September 2006) |
