There is a major difference between A hydra and The hydra.
Let’s see ... where do I start?
A hydra is a water jug and is usually not very dangerous or difficult to operate ... the last one I bought didn’t have an instruction booklet but I seemed to get the knack of it without too much trouble ... the water goes in the hole at the top and then miraculously pours out the hole in the top when you tip it over on its side ... not much of a brainer.
The hydra is another matter entirely.
The hydra is the multi-headed offspring of Echidna and Typhaon ... they were very proud of The hydra ... it’s easy for snake-monster parents to brag about their kids when they turn out to be large multi-headed snakes.
The hydra had a huge body with eight mortal heads and one immortal head ... it lurked in the swamps of Lerna, which was a pleasant little swamp near ancient Argos on the Peloponnesian Peninsula ... The hydra had a pretty easy life until it met up with Herakles ... that’s when things got a lot worse for The hydra ... after that The hydra got to spend some time with Herakles’ uncle Hades.
As mean and tough as he was, Herakles had a hard time defeating The hydra ... it seems that every time he hacked off one of the venomous heads, another one would sprout in its place ... Herakles finally got wise to the problem and started cauterizing the squirming necks with a torch as he cut off each head ... after the Hydra was dead, Herakles dipped his arrows in the poisonous blood and used the poison to get himself in trouble later on ... but that’s another story.
Just remember ... A hydra = water ... The hydra = poison ... seems simple enough.
