It’s true that Kalliste was created from a magical clod of dirt thrown into the sea ... the name Kalliste means Most Beautiful and there is no reason to doubt that the island deserved that name ... Kalliste was later called Thera and then finally Santorini.
When Jason and the Argonauts were making their way home after snatching the Golden Fleece, they were lost in the deserts of Libya ... the god Triton gave an Argonaut by the name of Euphemos a magical clod of dirt which he threw into the sea to become the island of Kalliste ... the island was colonized sometime after 1700 BCE by a descendant of Euphemos named Theras ... the island was renamed Thera in honor of Theras.
The history of Thera was uneventful until one fateful day ... in a matter of hours, Thera was transformed from a beautiful island to a giant ugly hole on the ocean ... okay ... set you time machine settings for December 21, 1450 BCE ... you want to go to the approximate coordinates of East Longitude 25º 42' and North Latitude 36º 41' ... you don’t want to get to close to sea level ... I suggest an altitude of about a mile ... put on your goggles and earmuffs ... sit back and enjoy the show.
Some of you might be tempted to go to the island a little early and try to save a few of the unsuspecting inhabitants from the impending doom ... if you check your time machine Users Manual it clearly and repeatedly says that if you interfere with the past, you might cause irreparable harm to the present ... in other words, you might cease to exist if you meddle with the past ... of course, that’s a completely negative perspective ... you might change the past and make the future a heck of a lot better than it is in its un-meddled form ... just use your best judgment and try not to delete me from the future/present.
The modern island of Santorini is really a beautiful place ... it’s quite a tourist attraction but it’s still sitting on an active volcano ... the next time it explodes will probably be the last we’ll ever see of an island in that part of the Aegean Sea ... if you want to see Santorini, go sooner rather than later ... I might even see you there!
