Greek Mythology: From The Iliad To The Fall Of The Last Tyrant

Fun Fact Quiz 6

Thanks For The Insult!

Yes ... we’re talking about the Eleusinian Mysteries here and the trek from Athens to Eleusis was part of those sacred ceremonies ... the Eleusinian Mysteries included the worship of Demeter, Persephone and Dionysos, god of Wine.

After a ritual cleansing and purification, participants would gather at the Sacred Gates near the Kerameikos cemetery and then walk from Athens to Eleusis on what was called the Sacred Way. The priests and priestesses of Demeter would lead the procession carrying a wooden statue of Iakchos ... the members of the procession chanted the name of Iakchos as they walked and would stop briefly at shrines of Apollon and Aphrodite along the road.

Now comes the weird part ... on the trek to Eleusis, masked men were stationed along the Sacred Way to insult the participants and humble them before they reached Eleusis ... the cleansing before leaving Athens, the insults on the road and the fasting after reaching Eleusis were supposed to prepare the faithful for the grand finale of the festival ... feasting, sacrifices and pouring libations to honor the dead.

Taking a few insults from masked men along the road was a small price to pay for the blessings of Demeter and Persephone.

You’ll find no insults in this Quiz ... just a few well meaning goads to keep you on your toes.
