Greek Mythology: From The Iliad To The Fall Of The Last Tyrant

Fun Fact Quiz 6

What A Nice Thought ... But You’re Wrong

The Eleusinian Mysteries included the worship of Demeter, Persephone and Iakchos as Bacchus (a.k.a. Dionysos, god of Wine).

The participants would gather at the Sacred Gates near the Kerameikos cemetery and then walk from Athens to Eleusis on what was called the Sacred Way.

The masked dudes you see on the side of the road are part of the ceremonies but they aren’t there to bless or encourage you ... don’t get me wrong ... there were many prayers and solemn moments during the celebration of the Eleusinian Mysteries but those masked characters were not part of the solemn aspects of the festival.

Let’s try this again ... I think you missed a couple of clues.

Missed Clue #1 - The guys on the side of the road were wearing masks ... then as now, masked characters on the side of the road are usually up to no good.

Missed Clue #2 - One third of the festival was dedicated to Bacchus, the god of Wine ... okay ... we now have the combination of masked men on the side of the road who have more than likely consumed festival sized goblets of wine ... hum ... you don’t have to be an FBI profiler to figure that one out.
