Hesiod and the Homeric Hymns

Hesiod: Theogony  Hesiod: Theogony, Works and Days and Shield translated by Apostolos N. Athanassakis
Three of the finest and oldest poems of Hesiod. Mr. Athanassakis is one of my favorite Greek translators because he seems to present the material faithfully without trying to modernize and explain the text as he goes along.

Hesiod Hesiod: Works and Days/Theogony/Shield of Herakles translated by Richmond Lattimore
These three poems date from circa 750 BCE and present three different views of life in ancient Greece. Theogony is the story of the origins of the Greek Immortals. Works and Days is the advice of an elder brother to his younger, less experienced, sibling and is full of home-spun advice and high-minded moral lessons taken from the ancient myths. The Shield of Herakles is a short epic (if there can be such a thing) describing a fight to the death between Herakles and one of the sons of Ares. All three poems are brilliantly presented by the master translator, Richmond Lattimore. The excellent index and genealogical charts make this a fine book for simply reading or doing some serious research.

Hesiod: Homeric Hymns  Hesiod: Homeric Hymns, Epic Cycle, Homerica, Loeb Classical Library volume 57 edited by Jeffrey Henderson
The Loeb Classical Library books give the Greek and English texts on facing pages. This arrangement makes it easy to follow the Greek words (especially the Greek proper names) as you read the translation. This particular book is full of complete poems as well as tantalizing fragments and commentary revolving around the Trojan War.

The Homeric Hymns The Homeric Hymns translated by Apostolos N. Athanassakis
The Homeric Hymns were once thought to be of little literary interest but translators such as Apostolos Athanassakis have given these wonderful poems the recognition they deserve. Mr. Athanassakis is one of my favorite Greek translators and I highly recommend this book.
